I can remember the moment I found out I was going to be a mom for the first time. Having all the usual symptoms, I took a test that came back negative. Then another, then another… Finally deciding there must be a user error, I bought the digital pregnancy test for the plus sign challenged and viola! Even though I could see the word “pregnant” printed on the test, and even though I had taken 4 tests convinced that I was, I suddenly couldn’t believe I was pregnant. I woke up my husband and as we sat at breakfast (Ann Sather on Belmont, mmmmm), we discussed all the possibilities. Of course there was the usual speculation, boy or girl. But I dreamed up all sorts of combinations for the perfect blend of my husband and myself, possessing none of our undesirable qualities. Nine months is a long time to spend growing life (and without a margarita) so what better way to pass the time than daydreaming about the new little person who will soon join your family? Every once in awhile I meet someone who is deep in the midst of that special time and it brings me right back to that morning at breakfast.

So it’s been a little while since my last blog post and I have no good excuse other than life. Along with shooting, editing, and the usual photography day to day, would you believe my kids have the nerve to still grow up?? My older daughter has lost not one, but two teeth. She started kindergarten, learned to spell “I lov mom dad”, and upon having her first visit to the E.R. decided she wants to be a doctor. And my younger has been busy as well… She has joined the ranks of the potty-trained, gotten a big girl bed, and decided the only socks worth wearing are pretty knee socks. These things have a way of creeping up on me and I look at these fascinating little people of mine and wonder where the time goes. Which brings me right back to photography… Sometimes I feel like it’s my personal mission to document all of these little moments so I don’t forget. So they don’t forget. So my clients don’t forget theirs either, because as parents, it’s easy to be caught up in the day to day and lose track of all the little special things that make up life.

People often ask me if taking photos of such cuties makes me want to have more children. The answer is yes! Yes it does! And what makes the temptation even greater is getting to spend time photographing smiling, wide-eyed, squeezable little babes. From about 7-9 months is one of my absolute favorite ages to photograph (ok, so I love all the stages but having had several babies in this range lately, they really stand out). I just love those chubby legged, toe grabbing, drooling, squealing little kiddos! That, and when they first start to walk, priceless. And when they learn to talk, and play dress up, and ride a bike, and… you get the picture.

I love my clients! Ok, I know that’s completely random, but it’s true. I feel like I’m constantly saying “I just had a great shoot with a fun family” but it’s usually the case! I am fortunate to have worked with people who are willing to try out new things/locations with me & who don’t hesitate to refer me to their friends and family. (Which BTW, if a client refers me to someone and they book a session, that client gets $25 off their next sitting fee!). I’ve had a lot of fun in the last few weeks getting outside with some of the above mentioned families. Here are some of my favorite shots…

Happy Accidents

I love happy accidents. The moments that are captured when you were originally intending to get something else are sometimes the best ones. I took some pics of one of my favorite little guys this weekend. His mom and I had such a great plan to get some cute shots of him eating an ice cream cone, melty ice cream on his face and cute little bare tummy. What we didn’t plan on was the shock of the cold ice cream. After dropping his cone, shedding some tears, and peeing on set, we decided to give the poor kid a break. I had a quick thought to try giving him a lollipop and one of his big sisters generously donated one she had left from Christmas. The result, a happy accident (for all involved) is posted below…

Every once in awhile I get the opportunity to take pics of something different. I love taking photos of kids and their families and I also relish to the opportunity to try something new. I had the honor recently of being asked to shoot a potential book cover for a great friend (and writer!) who is trying to get her first book published. It definitely sparked my creativity and got me pumped up. Here’s the cover shot we ended up using:

Baby blue turns two

At the risk of sounding cliche’, I can’t believe my baby is already two! Time flies when you’re having fun (and chasing a toddler all over creation). I have been guilty of the classic photo faux pas of not having nearly as many photos of my second child as I do of my first – pretty sad when you’re a professional photographer! So I decided to take miss Chloe for a little shoot to try and capture some of that larger-than-life personality of hers. Oh, and those big blue eyes too…

I often find myself thanking God for photography. Throughout my life I’ve had experiences that have very clearly pointed me towards this career path. One of the things I love most is getting to be a part of my clients’ lives. There are just some families that I feel an instant connection with and I am fortunate to get to watch as their children grow. To see a family grow with the addition of a new baby, and then see that baby start to smile, begin to sit up, crawl, learn to walk. To get to help document new life, milestones, baptisms and birthdays is such an honor. Not only do I get to be a witness to these special and personal events, I get to help capture them so that the family members can enjoy and relive them for years to come. If there’s a better job out there, I can’t imagine what it could be…
